About
I have a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Syracuse University. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California (LMFT #49616), Washington (LMFT #LF 61067042), Massachusetts (LMFT #1897-MH-MF), and Connecticut (LMFT #2765). I was previously licensed in Colorado. I’ve been working with individuals, couples, and families since 1997.
I am a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and am also an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. As of April 2021, I am a Certified Gottman Therapist (#406), which means that I have had advanced training and supervision in Gottman Method Couple Therapy. I am a Certified Sex Therapist (CST) with the American Association for Sexuality Education, Counseling, and Therapy (AASECT).
After a break of several years while teaching full-time, I returned to part-time private practice in 2012. I taught full-time at Alliant International University in the Clinical Counseling Master’s Program through 2016, when I took my practice full-time. In 2020, I relocated to Seattle, WA to become Core Faculty in the Antioch University Seattle Couple & Family Therapy program. I also founded Margin to Center Consulting, a 501(c)3 non-profit that helps pre-licensed mental health associates build private practices while also serving marginalized communities in an affirming and culturally sensitive manner.
I continue to see a small number of clients in my private practice. My primary focus is on helping couples and intimate partners have more satisfying, healthy romantic and sexual relationships, but I work with individuals and families as well. In addition to Gottman Method Couple Therapy, I work from a variety of family systems approaches, including Bowenian/Intergenerational, Emotionally Focused Therapy, feminist therapy, and multicultural/social justice lenses.
I served as President-Elect and then President for the Association for Family Therapy of Northern California, the oldest family therapy organization in the world. I am also a member (currently on hiatus) of the American Family Therapy Academy, an invitation-only professional association focused on systemic therapy and social justice.
I am a member of Bay Area Open Minds, a group of professionals and students who support sexual and gender diversity in our practices. I also belong to GAYLESTA, the LBGTQ Psychotherapy Association.
I am listed with Kink Aware Professionals, Fat Friendly Professionals, and Poly Friendly Professionals. I am a supporter of Size Acceptance/Fat Acceptance and Health at Every Size. You can read my listing at Psychology Today if you prefer it to this website.
My most recent publication is an article in the journal Family Process, titled “Expanding the Therapy Paradigm with Queer Couples: A Relational Intersectional Lens” written with my friend and colleague Dr. Deb Coolhart. I’ve also written chapters in “Multicultural Couple Therapy” and “Clinical Casebook of Couple Therapy.”
